WASH – Water, Sanitation and Hygiene

About PACHEDO’s WASH program:

Poor water and sanitation infrastructure and unhygienic behaviour pose a considerable health risk to the population of Northern Uganda. Particularly rural areas are affected. According to the Ministries Sector Performance Report 92 % of the rural population have access to a safe water source within 1km (MWE, 2017). Only 77 % (MWE, 2017) of the households in Gulu district have access to improved sanitation. Personal hygiene behavior, as indicated by “the percentage of people with access to (and using) handwashing facilities” remains strikingly poor. At district level it lies currently at 11 % (MWE, 2017), which is considerably lower than in 2015 (20 %).

Therefore we work closely with local communities and institutions to respond to their needs with regard to water, sanitation and hygiene. One major aspect of our work is to create awareness for the risks of poor WASH and the importance of improved hygiene and sanitation. Furthermore we support communities to get access to improved infrastructure. Therefore we build the capacities of the community members to manage the facilities better, we rehabilitate existing or construct new facilities, but we also train people to improve their homesteads, using the “small doable actions” approach. All our WASH activities are implemented in close cooperation with the responsible government structures and with other relevant stakeholders in the sector.

PACHEDO’s core WASH activities:

  • Participatory WASH assessments and community action planning
  • Rural water supply (borehole siting, installation and rehabilitation of handpumps)
  • Capacity building (training of Water source committees, training of pump mechanics)
  • Sanitation improvement (construction and rehabilitation of latrines)
  • Hygiene and sanitation promotion through trainings, sensitisations and community assemblies
  • Water for production (irrigation system design)
